So the other day I was speaking to a Chinese and he started talking about his next job, that he was going to work to Shangai. He tells me "I really don't like big cities. Shangai is too big. I come from small small town. I don't like too many people." So knowing the chinese I ask him where he comes from. "Oh, I come from very small town up north." Well, could you please define small? How many people in your town, I asked. "Oh, very small town. Only 3 million people." :-) I rest my case...

Old Resting Position

China is a country of many and very old traditions and so, I wonder what is the common resting position for the chinese? I was amazed when I saw it but it's really the common way, and they just assume this position like when you go to the woods and there is no WC around, and you really have to go leave a present to mother nature, this is a normal resting position. I've tried a few times to copy it, but I can't hold it more then 5 minutes, but here they stay 30min to 1 hour. Incredible. Just try it... you'll see it's not easy.

Military anyone?

So this week the freshmen (18 years old) started coming to University. The the first thing they do is a 2-week military training course, with no fooling around, plain hardcore, with discipline (imagine 5 thousand military guys going around the university, shouting, parading and running from dusk till dawn). After their initial training, they send them to a camp for learning how to shoot and fight. Remember how many persons in China??? Imagine this country's army, where everyone has to do military. :-0

What a Great City...

So here I go again, this time with another round of great new Chinese methods of doing things differently:

Seat Belts: As i told you, there guys are crazy during driving, crossing the road, riding the bicycle or anything that assembles a moving motion and a human being. So, after the first experiences of near crashes I decided that the best is not thing about it and just relax and put the seat belt. That's where my plan just went to the garbage. Although taxis have seat belts, 90% of the times they don't work. Don't ask me why but I tried dozens and got very few to work. And when I ask the taxi driver, they just look at me and start laughing. And then put their seat belt... yes, because theirs works. :-(

English: Although the taxi drivers don't speak english, the Taxis are all equipped with a little recording in English that they just turn on when arriving to the destination. Now, due to the huge push in the economy, most of the cars have the instructions in english because they come from european brands or american. No wonder they drive like that. The car says "Hand Brake On". Saying that or "The soup is served" is the same. ;-)

Suzie Wong: Now, don't tell me this is not typical name you would expect in a multicultural place like Beijing. It's a disco, and with that name it could only be good. You just feel attracted by the name. You think about the story of the name and just return to the past and seem to live in a completely new world. To go if you pass by Beijing.

Transformers: Now, if anyone has ever seen cartoons in the 80's, I'm sure you remember the "Transformers" and because Manga is also very big here, I went to the cinema with a few of the ISU people to see these great machines in action. The difficult part was that I went there after the rest, without knowing where the cinema was, and nobody speaking in english. Best advice in China: find a person that speaks chinese and english, get their mobile phone number, and never lose your mobile. It can save your life.

So eventually I got to the movie 5 minutes late, but because the noise was so big, I could not hear on the phone where the rest of the people were. And because it was the Premiere of the movie in China, the movie was in every room. There was 5 rooms in 3 different floors. I went to each one in the dark, went in, tried to look around to find them, seated, saw the movie was in chinese and got out. I managed to find them in the 5th room. Now, try to do this talking to people that do not speak english, plus I had no ticket so I needed to convince the employees to let me go in without ticket and by mimics. Uff, hard but I finally managed.

The movie was great, if anyone likes the typical american movie of action, explosions, shooting at everyone and everywhere, babes, fast cars, and of course Robots...

One little detail about taxis: they always tell you that they know the way where you want to go, but most of the times they don't. So they just stop in the middle of the street when the feel they are lost, leave the car running with the clients inside and go ask in the next cafe where is the way. I really like this city ;-)

Hello again,

so after a few more days of studying and going around Beijing, I have collected a few more experiences to share with you:

Money

In China they use yuans has money, where you will find almost everything is done with bills/notes, almost no coins. (10 yaun = 1 Euro) and you will find the bills go to 1 yuan or even 50 cents of yuan. So you have bills of 5 cents of euro. Incredible number of bills brings something to the market: Counterfeit.

We received the following message after a few days here. "Counterfeit notes are a problem in China. Very few Chinese will accept a Y50.00 (5 Euros) or Y100.00 (10 Euros) note without first checking to see whether or not it's a fake. Notes that are old, tattered, or torn are also sometimes hard to spend. You can exchange notes for new ones at the Bank of China. Counterfeits, however, will be confiscated. Local Chinese have a variety of methods for checking notes, including checking the watermark, the drawn lines (more distinct in fake notes) and color (more pronounced in counterfeit notes). The texture of a fake note also tends to be smoother than authentic notes. Examine large denomination notes if they are given to you as change by street vendors; they could well be dumping a forged banknote on you. One note: There have been cases where even the cash machines can also give counterfeit notes".

Toilets

I don't know if you've ever been in China, but they mostly only have holes in the ground when you need to go to the bathroom. When I say almost, it's because 1 in 100 toilets is a normal seating toilet. Now, the other day I asked a chinese where to find the normal (for me) toilets. He brought me a chair with a hole in the middle. :-)

I could only smile. You've probably seen the image Dani has posted a few days ago with this chair.

Sun

On sunday was my first sighting of the Sun and the Blue sky. The city is very polluted and some days it's difficult to breath due to the extreme temperatures (about 35 degrees every day) and extreme humidity, which has put everyone in here sick at one point or another. The sky is grey most of the time, and yesterday I was reading the local news (no, not in chinese) and the estimate is 3.5 million cars in Beijing by beginning of 2008. The government wants to stop traffic for 2 million cars on the last month before the Olympic Games, and clear the skies. Now that will be a challenge.

Driving

If you ever used a bicycle, and suddenly was put in your hands a car but you would continue using the rules of bicycles, I would say you have just arrived in china. There are no traffic lights although they are there, there are no zebra passage for people although they are there, there are no blinking lights for change of directions, because they don't exist in bicycles, and the size of a car must be the same size of a bicycle in the minds of the chinese taxi drivers, because I always think we are going to crash, normally against buses. But in all this mess, there is a normality. Don't ask me to explain. It just works.

Hi Everyone, here I am again. :-)

Ok, so for those of you who hope to get a really nice breakfast in China, I tell you, these guys eat a lot of noodles in the morning. It looks great, but my stomach did not see the joke and complained a bit this morning. :-(

And I have been tempted to buy these crepes they make here on the streets, but because normally you find puppies and rabbits being sold next to it, I have not fully taken the courage to ask.

Ah, I also learned my first chinese words with the students around here. So repeat after me:

I also went the center of Beijing and I can tell you, do not enter the subway on rush hour. It's 40 degrees inside, people sweating, all really next to each other, like a sandwich, I felt like I was the ham or something, and the 50 guys next to me were bringing the bread. But I really like the city. It's dirty and hot and foggy and dusty, but at the same time it's vibrant, active, shows power and brut force to win and they really want to show their best. Ask something to a chinese and they will go to incredible lengths to help you.

I found a part of Darmstadt in here: Next to the university there is... imagine what is big, has a lot of products inside, comes from the land of Bush and normally in Germany locates itself next to an army base... Yes, it's Walmart.

I have been already 3 times to Tai-chi at 6 in the morning. I have to go at that time otherwise the chinese disappear at 6h30. So after that, I go for a little run because Tai-chi is really not very active.

Another thing is that it must be because they only eat noodles and veggies and no really big hard food like in Germany, and so I have seen a lot of nice girls, but a bit small so it's getting hard finding a girlfriend around here, I guess I'll just have to concentrate on my studies and let life take its course.

Work is starting to push, the lectures are now only in the morning, after lunch we have our project, I have chosen "Space Traffic Management" since it is not my area and it touches a lot of issues that I never had time to study or work in. Basically it focuses on Space Debris, De-orbiting of satellites, Space Tourism, Space Weather and Mitigation issues on satellites. If any of you has any good information to share on any of these points, now is the time to say :-)))

After the project time that finishes around 18h, it's dinner time... at 18h until 19h. half an hour later starts the panels, basically a group of people talking about a certain subject. The other day it was Space Entrepreneurs: Creating New Markets. And we had 5 entrepreneurs: one canadian for laser pointing products on satellites, one british for registration for launches of geo-stationary satellites, one chinese for satellite launching (56 launches, 0 fails), one american astronaut from NASA that now started a company for orbital-flights for space tourism, and one american that sends ashes of famous dead people to space and started this 25 years ago, and has a contract with NOAA to send satellites to L1 for prediction of Solar Winds (space weather).

And that's it.

First Impressions

First of all I want to thank Dani for letting me write on his great blog and report on my experience here in Beijing. He's been a great friend and don't forget, tomorrow it's his birthday :-)

So a few days ago I landed on this chinese city by the name of Beijing. And here are my First impressions.

The city is huge, full of life everywhere, and you can sense a dynamic on the economy that is not normal, it's like if everyday something big was happening in town that elevated the status of the economy.

One of the first myths to be broken: Bicycles. Yes it's everywhere, yes there are millions of them and most of them are quite old, rusty and dirty, but the most amazing is Cars. It seems like everyone in this town wants one. The ads are everywhere for cars, even elevators, toilets, ice cream shops... There are now around 3 million cars in Beijing, and the growth is at 2 thousand new cars on the streets everyday. Yes, everyday.

The organization of ISU has been great, we are in the Beihang University, one of the top Universities in China and we are staying in the dorms of the Athlete's Village, 10 buildings of 15 stories each. I'm on the 10th floor. It's good conditions, and we are 3 in each room. But now the chinese students are also here with us, but instead of 3 in each room, they are 12 in each room. I mean, they can really squeeze chinese people everywhere.

Another curious thing about the dorms is that all the beds are high on the ground, so like a beliche (portuguese word) but without the lower bed, only the one on top. And for I don' t know which reason, everywhere there are Big signs saying "Warning: Don't fall from bed". Even the campus director told us this today. :-|

Another figure is the Campus. It is enormous. Yesterday I went for a run around the campus in the morning and saw how big this thing really is. Not only all the facilities of the University are here, but the dorms as well. And there are at present 40 thousand students here now. Yes 40. But the biggest number is not that. It's that this University is only for related subjects of Aeronautics and Aerospace. Needless to say that the Chinese Space Agency (CASC) here in Pekin has 70 thousand employees. And that 300 thousand chinese work directly on the Space Industry. Now imagine this country's Space Industry in 5 / 10 years time. :-0

During my run, and this was at 6 in the morning, the life outside was already at full speed. The temperatures are around 35 everyday and the humidity is huge, so it's hard to do most of the things, that's why life starts early. I don't even want to imagine August. That's going to hurt. But during my run, I found hundreds of old people doing exercise everywhere. They have all the facilities here, most of it is brand new. They do all kinds of sports, running, walking, volley, ping-pong, badminton, but specially Tai-Chi. I did 5 minutes just to try, but I have to learn the moves first. After 5 minutes they took out swords, so I thought it was time to move to another place.

Our facilities for the classes are all brand new, we are the first people in, and are really amazing. The main building is so big and so tall that you feel really tiny when you enter it. The way of the chinese of saying "We are here to conquer"

The people are extremely friendly, although it is not easy to find people speaking english. Since I arrive, I feel like a rock star. The chinese are always starring at us, the foreigners, and never look away. Then they come and ask if they can take us a picture, or sometimes, they just take a zillion pictures. Then they come with friends to show what they have just discovered, this tall guy with a funny face, coming from this distant planet called Portugal. The best way to react, to give them your biggest smile. :-)

And one last story to finish my first report of events, is that there are no restrictions whatsoever, except one: That all men cannot walk with flip-flops, or show the fingers of the feet. That's forbidden. :-( So I can't use my Hawaiian Flip-Flops.

In our rooms we have normal toilets, but people were complaining that in the East Wing library the toilets were... just a hole in the ground (not really, just the typical old style toilets, that one may find in military camps, some schools, or other places, plus they are clean and new). So the Chinese found a solution for us... dunno how many people are going to use it though, me not...

-An entrepreneurs panel, with founders of several companies dedicated mainly to space tourism.

-A cross-cultural negotiation workshop, we were lucky to have a really multicultural group (India, Japan, China and Turkey are discussing on political systems and term of office durations on the right end of the table)

-Our first Chinese class, the teacher was not very prepared but only because she had not expected to give class alone: there were three teachers for the same class, but we were so many that they had to separate us in three groups.

-Our first class meeting, to complain, make suggestions, give announcements... basically to complain, some people are so... spoiled! They are complaining that they have already run out of electricity for the month (it is limited to a certain amount per day) and that now they don't have for the two days that are missing of June. I don't know what they do, I spend 30-40% of what it is allowed per day. They told them to keep their air-conditioners off during the day when they are not there. And they say that they can do whatever they want! (sad part is that the guy is 40 years old or something). Well, I was not even expecting to have air conditioner, look at the poor guys in ESOC!! And it is not so warm in the room, I only connect it in the mornings to refresh the air, but at night I have it off and of course during the day... Normally 4 people live in that room, if one alone spends more than 4 Chinese...

-Lessons on the solar system and the Sun by Green (works for NASA in interplanetary missions, has worked in Goddard, in HQ, JPL... I think he has even worked with the Voyager 1 and 2 missions)

This last couple of days we have made a habit of meeting in the central... playground? park? patio? between the buildings of the Athlete's village (10 buildings, we are lodged in buildings 1 to 5 I believe). It is quite nice, many people around. First night Jose and Maximiliano made a little improv theater, it was hilarious... but only because it was sooooo bad... well, but it was fun.

-Jeffrey Hoffman, already mentioned him, photo was taken after our first Chinese class, he also joins

-Leroy Chiao, NASA astronaut, 6 times EVA, flown with Shuttles, with Soyuz, more than 6 months on the ISS... He came for a panel of entrepreneurs of space tourism, because he has signed up for a company (Excalibur Almaz) that will make orbital tourism...

En cuanto al viaje... con semejantes compañeros la diversión estaba garantizada. Y comprobamos que se pueden ver 4 ciudades en 2 días (Gante, Brujas, Lovaina y Bruselas) y seguir sabiendo en que país está uno.

Además en el viaje iba incluido un pack de idiomas: Italiano en vena y Valenciano/Catalán en 2 sabores a elegir... Que este post esté en algún idioma original no tiene nada que ver, claro

A finales de octubre. Si, eso que se ve es la barbacoa que organizó Juan el domingo pasado. Y la cosa blanca es un secador de pelo (y no, la foto no es ningún montaje)

Lo más sorprendente fue el vecino (por cierto, que chozita tiene el amigo) que apareció con 10 sillas de terraza, un alargador de 30 metros y un secador de pelo venerable para que hiciésemos las brasas... En España se hubiese dedicado a gritarnos para que nos fuéramos.

Well, this basically fulfils two goals:

First of all, it proves that I (and the rest too, by the way) survived the canoying with high5. Thanks Dwarf007, Chris and Ricardo for all the organisation: it was great!! Next time we do the advanced, and there WILL be a next time. I will post some photos as soon as possible.

Second, it serves as recommendation for one amazing (and a really dark) french movie (according to IMDB French-Spanish-German... egal) shown tomorrow at the Audi-Max by the ESOC Ciné-Club. Certainly a no miss! Ah, I forgot, it has English subtitles.

Dos cosillas:

Primero, sobrevivimos todos al descenso de cañones en Dornbirn con high5. Gracias a Dwarf007, Chris y Ricardo por la fantástica idea y toda la organización. Se salió! La próxima vez (que va a haber) hacemos el avanzado! Las fotos... en cuanto pueda las cuelgo.

Y segundo, recomendar una gran (y oscurisima) peli francesa (segun IMDB franco-hispano-germana... lo que sea) que echan mañana en el Audi-Max, organizado por el ESOC Ciné-Club. No os la podeis perder! Ah, me olvidaba, tiene subtítulos en inglés.

Limpiando la memoria del móvil me he encontrado con las pruebas de lo que ocurre cuando sueltas a tus amigos en una casa con varios botes de pintura y armados con brochas y rodillos... vean, vean:

"Cómo me gusta pintaaaaar!!" Parece pacífico pero no se confundan... detrás de la imagen de Tom Sawyer inocente se oculta un peligrosísimo enemigo.

¡Empiezan las hostilidades! La pobre Julia se defiende como como puede. Se masca la tragedia!

¿Alguno pensó que con la carilla inocente de Julia no iba a pasar nada más? Aquí está la prueba de como prepara el contraataque... qué mirada fría y calculadora! La batalla que se avecina será a brochazo limpio, incluso puede que alguno de los contendientes recurra al Rodillo de la Muerte

Pero en plena refriega surge David: la pintura es intensa en él y pone orden en el berengenal. En la imagen, justo antes de que los rayos de pintura empezasen a salir de sus manos...

Aprovechando que el sábado Andrés cumplió su promesa de prepararnos comida imperial, y que ayer nos escapamos del curro para ir a un japo a comer, cuelgo un par de fotos más de nuestro viaje al país del sol naciente.

Por fin tuve acceso a las fotos de Loli en las que salgo dándoles de comer a los ciervos de Nara, no, NOOO, no es lo que estáis pensando, mentes enfermas!!! La segunda es una foto que nos envió Eimisan de su familia, a que molan? En la parte inglesa un paso de peatones a la salida de la estación de Shibuya, y otra en el Ginza de noche con lluvia, en Tokyo (es que no había puesto ninguna de la capital).

After an imperial dinner last Saturday (thanks Andrés!) and an "all you can eat" sushi lunch yesterday, memories kept coming back from my recent trip and I could not help uploading some more pictures.

First of all, argghhh, you sick minds!! nooo, that is not what you were thinking, it is just me feeding the deers of Nara (and by feeding I mean deer food), Loli is an expert at taking photos from the perfect angles. Second ons is a picture that Eimisan sent me of her family, aren't they cute? Below are two pictures of Tokyo: a zebra crossing in Shibuya, and at Ginza by night and in the rain (I love the reflection of the neons on the water).

Weiterstadt: more than just Segmüller

This weekend starting today is the international short film festival of Weiterstadt (international? where? in Weiterstadt, really?), it's openair (lame idea) and free (except Moday that they replay the winner/best short films ). It could be a nice thing to go to see one of the days. There are tons (well, let's say dozens) of movies in several languages (=international), always with German subtitles if neccessary, many were in English last year.

No es que me haya olvidado de este blog pero hacía mucho que no posteaba... y no será por historias curiosas como la visita al museo de las matemáticas (visita geek donde las haya que da +10 en las tiradas de frikismo), el viaje a Viena-Bratislava o alguna que otra fiesta reciente (ya sea con la excusa del jodio fúmbol o porque sí)

La visita a Bratislava esta bien, es bonita, pequeñita... y no merece la pena. Encima lo mejor de la visita, que hubiese sido el viaje de Bratilava a Viena en barco por el Danubio nos la cancelaron porque el río iba muy crecido. En Viena qué se puede contar, hay ciudad para perderse varias veces -y eso sin entrar en museos- incluso para ponerse una noche a jugar al melenudo en un pub irlandés (hay que ser originales) o para tomarse una tarta sacher auténtica.

La visita a la ópera también estuvo muy bien... eso si, recordaba más entrañable la anterior, quizá porque iba de mochilero y el contraste es mayor (y porque fue hace casi diez años... !cómo pasa el tiempo!)

Las fiestas varias me las reservo para otros posts...

No, I continue in this blog, I have not forgot it... And I am plenty of things to write about... from the visit to the math museum (add +10 to all your freak rolls) to the trip to Bratislava and Wien and some recent parties (with or without football)

Visiting Brarislava is that kind of things that don't hurt... even if you miss them. And for one really nice thing to do: Going to Wien by boat through the Danube was cancelled because the river was too high. Luckily Wien is city enough to get lost into it several times (not counting the museum!) You can ever play a Melenudo in an Irish pub one night -be original!- or to taste an original Sacher cake.

Visiting the Opera house was also nice... I remember it charmer from the last time but of course that time I was a Interrail guy and was 10 years ago!!

... and we took the "relaxed" option of "just" seeing Himeji today and a bit more of Kyoto: yesterday we met by chance in a shop in Kyoto one Spanish guy from the DLR that had lived for a year here in Japan (we had seen each other only in the conf.). He proposed a suicidal plan for Loli and me: going to Hiroshima with the Shinkansen, seeing the memorial park, back to Himeji with the same train, seeing the castle, and back to Kyoto. He said he had heard of people doing it the same day and survived. We departed with that idea but the other way around: leave early, see Himeji, if it turns out to be fast and easy, go on till Hiroshima. We did not go on and enjoyed the gardens next to the castle instead. Tomorrow we leave Hanakiya (THANK YOU EIMISAN!!!) for Tokyo

Photos: Isidro will miss the monk food, Himeji castle behind, security is heavily enforced inside the castle (reminds me of the Flintstones), in the gardens.

En breve...

A la zapatilla por detrás...

Anoche nos fuimos a dormir a uno de los tempos budistas en Koyasan en medio de las montañas, muy curioso. La cena se me atragantó un poco (arroz y verduritas, pero iba algo mal de estomago) y la cama no era de las más cómodas (estos monjes, que les gusta sufrir) que hemos probado, pero la experiencia muy curiosa... los templos en Koyasan preciosos (mas de 100, 50 de ellos alojan gente), el camino en el bosque flanqueado de linternas, monumentos funerarios, y cedros altísimos impresiona, esta mañana me he levantado a las 6 para participar en los rezos budistas y rezar por mis ancestros (yo sólo, rajaos!!!), y el templo donde nos alojamos era de los más bonitos y muy bien situado. Os dejo con unas cuantas fotos, las primeras del proceso de cambio de zapatillas necesario para pasar de unoa zona a otra: calle-templo, templo-habitación, templo-jardín, templo-baño. Pondrí fotos del templo, las habitaciones, el camino de peregrinos, el cartel de peligro osos... pero quedaría muy cargado... quizás otro post, dependiendo de cuando vuelvan estos de llamar.

P.S.: Es cierto que los monjes (solo había 7, una chica entre ellos) te colocan los zapatos hacia el lado correcto y bien paralelos si tu los dejas mal fuera de la habitación, jeje

Yesterday night we spent it at a buddhist temple in Koyasan, in the middle of the mountains, curious experience. Dinner made me a bit sick (rice and vegs, but I was already feeling not so well) and the beds were not the most confortable ones we've tried (this monks... they like suffering), but overall it was a nice experience. More than 100 temples in Koyasan, around 50 lodging people, the walk in the forest surrounded by lanterns, funerary monuments and impresive high trees that leads to the mausoleum is breathtaking, this morning I woke up at 6 to participate in the morning prayers and ask for my ancestors (only me, lazybones!!), and the temple we were lodged at was quite nice and well located. A few photos of the process of changing shoes: street-temple, temple-room, temple-garden, temple-bath. There are many other photos I would like to upload: our temple, the rooms, the pilgrim path, the bear-warning sign... maybe in another post.

P.S.: True that monks line your shoes correctly in parallel if you left them slightly off when entering your room, of course, when they think you are not watching.

La nueva habitante de Schleiermacherstrasse

Este post que escribo desde mi nuevo hogar va dirigido a mis dos compis de piso que andan en estos momentos muy lejos de aquí: Dani, Loli, mientras vosotros os estais divirtiendo por Japón yo ya he tomado posesión del piso! Por el momento me siento todavía un poco como una intrusa pero supongo que en unos días ya me habré adaptado

Eso sí, increíble esta mañana cuando me he levantado y el sol invadía medio salón, qué buen despertar! (ya llevamos varios días rondando los 30 grados!!)

Ciervos o venados??

Hemos estado en Nara, dando de comer y haciéndonos fotos con los ciervos... como recomendó Eimi. Como veis, Loli no tenía muy claro que pinta tiene un ciervo, así que le dieron un poco gato por liebre. Para andar por ahí nos alquilamos unas bicis, muy práctico, aunque eso de subir el sillín no lo tienen muy dominado.

Nara es precioso, muchisimos templos en medio de parques y bosques, y los caminos flanqueados por linternas de piedra y puertas tori (y ciervos todo el rato). Mis fotos dando de comer están en la cámara de Loli

Loli and I went today to Nara, we've been feeding and making photos of the deers, as Eimi recommended. Loli was not so sure how a deer looked like, so I think somebody fooled her a bit. We rented some bikes, quite practical, althought the concept of raising the seat must be foreign for them... that must be why they all ride their bikes as if they were Harleys.

Nara is beautiful, tons of temples surrounded by forests and parks, walkways lined up with stone lanterns and tori doors... (and have I metioned? deer everywhere!)

Kanazawa-Kyoto

Today we left Kanazawa, finally exchanging our Japan Rail Passes vouchers, and we arrived in Kyoto. We are staying at Ryokan Shimizu, it is quite a nice place, better than our hotel in Kanazawa... and quite typical: all wooden, sleeping on tatami mats, wardrobes and doors japanese style, japanese bath... (and as you can see, internet connection)

We've also seen part of Kyoto: here Kinkakuji (the golden pavillion), and the sign at the entrance of the zen garten at Daisenin (a budhist temple), final one resting at the gardens of the imperial palace

Ya tenemos Japan Rail Pass y hemos llegado a Kyoto, nos quedamos en Ryokan Shimizu, un sitio muy típico pero moderno todo de madera y estilo japonés, con tatami-mats para dormir, armarios y puertas de madera y papel, baño japonés... (y como veis, internet)

Hemos visto también algo de Kyoto, en las fotos el Kinkakuji (pabellón dorado), el cartel en la puerta del jardín zen en Daisenin, y descansando en el parque del palacio imperial.

Izda. los dos con trajes, ya han pasado nuestras presentaciones, y han salido muy bien. Nos podemos relajar algo más. Rüdi debe tener fotos de nosotros presentando, que añadiré a este post cuando las tenga. Nuestra sesión en concreto ha sido totalmente ESOC (yo, Loli, Martin, Rüdiger, Michael, en ese orden, no soy un maleducado) A la derecha comiendo en un sitio de fideos chinos (ramen), aunque ninguno hemos pedido fideos... vaya!! También hemos tenido otro encontronazo con el idioma japonés: queríamos pedir un plato de gyooza con seis unidades (una para cada uno, para probarlas de entrada) y nos trajo 6 platos, cada uno con 6 unidades... mmhh a veces me pregunto si no me entienden o si entienden lo que quieren. De todas formas comer aquí es baratísimo (nos salió a 900 yenes, unos 7 euros, con los seis platos extra incluidos, así que no nos importó y la verdad es que acabamos casi con todo.

Después de la comida pasamos a ver una ceremonia del té, y nos dejaron probar a hacerlo a nosotros mismos. Al lado hay una casa japonesa con jardín para relajarnos que habrá que probar algún día. La útima foto es una mariposa que hemos visto de vuelta al congreso.

Reception night

Yesterday night we had a reception dinner with Noh theater (Kakitsubata) an Koto music. Rüdi made some photos that I may hang up when available.

Later we had a small problem in a restaurant: we wanted to just go in for a beer and sake and not eating, we asked so and they said yes, we then ordered and they were coming again and again asking if we were sure that we did not want to eat, at the end she was quite annoyed, so either she did not understand me at the beginning, or she did not want to say no and hoped she would convince us once inside. We left quite annoyed and she charged a lot for the drinks... bitch!

After that we went directly to the hotel to prepare a bit more the presentation and sleep

Ayer tuvimos una recepción con teatro Noh (Kakitsubata) y música Koto. Rüdi hizo algunas fotos así que cuando las tenga las cuelgo.

Después tuvimos un pequeño percance en un restaurante: queríamos entrar solo a tomar una cerveza y sake sin comer nada y la chica dijo sí, pero una vez habíamos pedido estuvo insistiendo varias veces para que pidieramos algo. Una de dos: o no me entendió al principio, o no quiso decir no esperando convencernos dentro de comer algo. Después de unas cuantas veces, decidimos irnos bastante molestos, y nos cobró bastante... zorra!

Y de allí directamente al hotel a preparar un poco mi presentación y dormir.

Todo bien en japón!!!

Hemos encontrado un sitio donde conectarnos, se llama T's Labo y está muy bien, no hablan inglés y hemos intentado pagar pero nos dicen que es gratis, no es un café así que ni idea de desde dónde estamos escribiendo, sera una corporación que promueve internet, porque es un sitio bastante moderno!! Por ahora todo bien, problemas con los enchufes (en el aeropuerto de Tokyo pensaba que tendrían adaptadores pero no, en el hotel tampoco, y nos han indicado un centro comercial pero tampoco había, menos mal que hace un rato nos hemos cruzado con Chema por la calle, casualidad, y nos ha dicho que tiene tres, luego ya le asaltaremos) y hoy hemos ido a dar una vuelta por la ciudad. También hemos ido a la fiesta de apertura del congreso, es gracioso, hemos conocido a mucha gente, está uno de mis profes de doctorado (Pelaez), y resulta que le ha tocado la habitación en el hotel entre la de Loli y la mía (seguidas) y hoy le he tenido que llamar después del congreso para avisarle que había colgado el cartel de no molestar por el lado de "quiero que me limpien la habitacion inmediatamente!!" jeje nos ha dado las gracias porque se pensaban echar una siesta y claro, si les entra la señora de la limpieza...

Hemos visto ya algún templo, un castillo... y si puedo pasar las fotos aquí las cuelgo del blog! no me puedo extender que a pesar de ser gratis me siento muy raro con un japata mirandome sin poder comunicarnos!!

Seré breve: paso directo a fotos y comentarios.

A la izquierda nuesto avión, de ANA, a la derecha un equipo de baseball de niños en el aeropuerto de Frankfurt, como en las series manga.

A la izda. tienda de comics e internet Freaks!! para quien yo me sé (ya lo sé, torcida, pero esta aquí bloqueado todo lo de girar fotos, así que inclinar la cabeza, vagos!!) A la dcha. en el avión, la chica del sitio de al lado usaba una de las típicas mascarillas anticontagio...

Izda., os acordáis de las zamburguesas?? a la derecha el pijama que nos dan en el hotel, jeje, por cierto no hablan ni una pabra de inglés en recepción.

También hemos hecho algo de turismo...: templos, castillos y sitios que hemos visto por aquí en Kanazawa, aún no he hecho ninguna foto en el centro de convención, ya nos veréis en traje!!

Tomorrow? not even tomorrow!!! One could even say today! (but a lot of hours still left to take the plane and then a whole "partly virtual" day to get there). So I am afraid you won't see my face in the next two weeks, unless I find the time to post something in here. Have fun in lively Darmstadt, I sure will in Japan!! (even the days I will be working).

Best party in DA without doubt, the Schlossgrabenfest (not counting private parties at Pierre's... Conchi rocked yesterday!). This year, among the groups coming, we have Los mariachis del mariachi, yuhoooo!!! (who helped them choose name?). Now I feel like I have been eating the whole weekend (except when I was below water, rescuing Marcel...): Friday a bit at Javi's party (more drinking than eating, but not as much as some ;P), Saturday a lot at Andres&Libe's thank you dinner, Sunday non-stop from lunch on at Libe's again with the wonderful cakes noone could eat yesterday , and when I thought I could not fit a single crumb more, I just moved houses (to Filippo's), and not walking or biking to burn a bit of calories, to continue with the cheeses. Tomorrow I won't have breakfast!

Burlones en Bélgica... preciso!

Hacía tiempo que intentaba organizar este viaje al país del chocolate, los gaufres, las frites y las mil cervezas, y por fin lo conseguí!

Visita obligada a Bruselas, Brujas y Gante… pero el principal objetivo del viaje era pasar por Redu! conocido también como el pueblo del libro, un idílico lugar donde se esconde entre prados una estación de control de la ESA, en la cual estuve trabajando durante algo más de un año…

Por cierto, durante este viaje se descubrió el gran uso que se puede dar a palabras como "preciso" y "burlón" en la vida cotidiana, eh chicos??

La mudanza Infernal

Tras 4 días de esfuerzos y duro trabajo por fin me he mudado. No sé cómo agradecerle a todos los que se pasaron por casa para pintar, limpiar y hacer la mega-mudanza (lo prometo, para la próxima vendo las 3/4 partes de los muebles y hacemos la mudanza en un Micra).

Por suerte no hay que lamentar muertos ni heridos (aunque yo tengo unos moratones y arañazos que parece que me he peleado con un gato) y ahora me esperan unos cuantos días de jugar al chinocajas en vivo.

Si eres de los que pintaste medio zócalo... el resto de la pared te quedó de maravilla (y tienes razón, el zócalo también necesita una manita). Si te fallaron las asas de la caja con todos los discos... aunque no te lo creas de 3 discos que probé los tres estaban en su estuche (y ¡qué narices! A estas alturas debería de tenerlo todo en mp3). Si protestaste porque era un explotador... tendrías que haber protestado más (haceros currar y teneros sin cenar, ¡qué vergüenza!). Si te tocó conducir la fregoneta gigante y mover las cosas de alto tonelaje... no sé qué hubiese hecho sin ti. Si estabas cojo y te hice subir una lavadora 2 pisos y pico después de despertarte un domingo a las 10 de la madrugada... si, soy un negrero cruel y despiadado y me merezco todos los castigos que puedan inventar para mí en el tártaro. Mientras, podéis contar conmigo para cuantas mudanzas se os ocurran.

Y a todos los demás que aparecisteis por allí sin saber muy bien la que os esperaba ¡GRACIAS!

Vergüenza ajena

Nadie curra en el Día Internacional del Trabajo... ¿nadie? Bueno, eso que se lo pregunten a casi 1000 policías de todo Hessen que estuvieron controlando y deteniendo coches en todas las carreteras de entrada a Heppenheim, bloqueando la estación y todas las calles adyacentes y básicamente tomando el pueblo. ¿La razón? evitar una manifestación neonazi de las que suelen ocurrir el 1 de Mayo por toda Alemania (y las contramanifestaciones). Tuvieron exito, la prensa dice que hubo 400 (y 700 contramanis, entre los pacifistas, los del partido socialista, punkies, etc), nosotros solo vimos un grupusculo de 30 o 40 que reunieron a la salida de la estación de tren, y fueron llevados (rodeados por agentes a pie, en moto y en coche) despacito y con buena letra hasta desaparecer en el horizonte.

¿El título de la entrada? Pues resulta que entre los 30 tenía que haber un gracioso con una gran bandera de España, ¡hay que joderse! (lo raro es que no era la del pollo)

Seguro que los policías habrían preferido mil veces quedarse en casa, hacer un pic-nic o apuntarse con la gente (por eso estabamos allí) a la caminata del vino por las colinas.

Nobody works the first of May, the International Day of Work... nobody? Well, go ask the almost 1000 policemen from all Hessen that had to basically take the town of Heppenheim (controlling and stopping all vehicles in the roads into town, blocking the train station and adjacent streets, and having one patrol in every corner). Why all that mess? they were trying to avoid one of the neonazi demonstrations that normally take place the 1st of May (and the counter-demos that can end up in real fights). They succeeded: according to the press 400 nazis and 700 against, we only saw a tiny group of 30 with flags and a loudspeaker that were grouped together in the station and taken away slowly and peacefully surrounded by tons of police till ...? till they were out of sight.

And why was I ashamed (title of the post, literally "feeling shame for other acts")? It just happened that among the 30 there was an idiot holding a big spanish flag (not that I care about the flag, but...). Moron...

I'm quite sure the pólice would have preferred staying at home, or doing pic-nic, or just doing the wine-walk in the hills like the rest of the normal people going to Heppenheim this day (including half of ESOC).

Resumen de la bajada: un cojo, dos luchando, un paraguas roto en un ataque frontal, uno con la ropa hecha un cristo, todos calados, pero todos descojonados, siguiendo una antorcha en medio de la lluvia nocturna, jejeje, David lo debió flipar llevándolos de vuelta a Darmstadt, yo por mi parte me quedé en Heidelberg (gracias Angela!!!) para continuar la marcha por las colinas al día siguiente.

Tanz in der Mai

For all those who are not planning to be at the Queen's birthday this weekend, or Iceland as other, there is a couple of great things to do around here! First Sunday night the Tanz in der Mai in Heidelberg, 12000 people (or so they said) were last year at the mountain of Heiligenberg to celebrate the Hexenfeuer (Witch fires?). One hour walking up the hill, and then fires, drums, dancing, juggling... you have never seen something like that (except if you were there another year). Anybody planning to go?

As for Monday the first of May (day after Witch's night) its is the Bergsträßer Weinlagenwanderung, just walking up and down along the paths of the Bergstrasse (if the weather allows), and tasting the different wines of the region!!

Darmstadt es famoso en el mundo entero porque desde aquí controlamos los satélites de la ESA, la Merck realiza sus experimentos biológicos y T-Online tiene su sede...

Pues resulta que es una de las pocas ciudades con un elemento químico con su nombre: el Darmstadtio Aunque parezca de coña, tiene su razón de ser. En Darmstadt-Wixhausen está el G.S.I. un acelerador de partículas, donde a base de darle leñazos a los átomos han creado los elementos del 108 al 112 (por cierto, al 108 lo llamaron Hassio)

¿Y a qué viene todo esto? No, no es que me aburra mucho y haya decidido darme un empacho de tabla periódica. Viene a raíz de una visita que hicimos ayer al GSI gracias al amigo de un amigo que trabaja allí. Realmente impresionante el tamaño de los aparatos que tienen que montar para detectar cosas que ocurren en un femptosegundo y miden menos de un Armstrong... y los bloques de hormigón que tienen para no irradiar medio Hessen

Sorprendentemente el uso principal del acelerador ahora mismo es médico. Usan el haz de partículas para tratar tumores.

Quién lo iba a decir! Un grupo de colegas, Interferencias, ha sido seleccionado dos veces en menos de una semana para sendos concursos de maquetas de dos de los más importantes festivales de música pop en nuestro país: para el ContemPOPranea (viva Alburquerque!!! pero bueno, parece que de esta web ya se han caído de la lista de grupos... o eso, o no cabían todos, siendo optimistas) y poco después aparecieron en la web del FestiMad (vale, este festival no es solo popero...). No está nada, nada mal!!

Interferencias, a group of friends of mine, has had their songs selected for the contests of two of the main pop music festivals in Spain: the ContemPOPranea (long life to Alburquerque!!! well, in the official web their song has already dropped from the list... too bad), and for the FestiMad (not only pop, this one). Fallas 2006: Están locos estos americanos!

Tras el viajecito que nos hemos dado para ir a fallas (la excusa oficial era traer el coche de Dani) ahora toca contar lo que nos acordemos.

Como hay mucho material iremos poco a poco añadiendo. Y para abrir boca que mejor que presentar al invitado especial más asombroso que me he encontrado (y con más suerte)

Por fallas nos movíamos en un grupo de 30 personas, incluyendo 3 españoles y un francés llegados desde Germania... así que casi nada podía sorprendernos. Pero cuando apareció Carmen con un americano que se había venido desde algún estado (no era uno de los habituales, con lo que no recuerdo el nombre) exclusivamente para pasar 3 días en fallas ciertamente lo consiguió.

Por si fuese poco resultó que no venía a verla a ella, Carmen simplemente se ganó el 1er premio con mención especial a la buena obra del año al recogerlo en una estación de metro. El chico se había venido por las bravas a visitar a una amiga... que nunca apareció (¿osado? más bien suicida)

El colega tuvo la increible, inaudita suerte de que Carmen lo alojó 3 días (en Valencia en fallas están ocupados hasta los puentes) y se lo llevó de juerga con nuestro grupo.

Lo que realmente me intriga es ¿Qué le contará el colega al volver a su terruño a sus amigos?

Things to do after the trip we have done to fallas (official reason: bring back Dani's car) try to write what we can remember.

As any can imagine we have plenty of material, so maybe this is the first post of a series! And to start what can be better than the most amazing guest I've ever found (and a really lucky one)

When you move in a war-zone city with a group of 30 people not too many things can surprise you (specially if in the group there are 3 spanish and a french guy coming from Germany) But Carmen definitely managed to do it when she appeared with an american coming directly from his I-do-not-remember state only for the 3 fallas days.

Now comes the best: This guy is not a friend of Carmen... she only won the first class price to the Good action of the year picking him up in a metro station. The happy-minded guy had come to visit a friend that never appeared (a guy with guts? or just suicidal)

Carmen gives the astoundingly-lucky man bed for 3 days (even the parks are full in fallas) and bring him with our group to the all-night-long parties...

But what I really wanted to know is: Later back at home, what has he told his friends?

No, no estoy hablando de la película sobre el equipo de rugby perdido en los Andes, ni ninguno de nosotros se extravió en las cumbres del Zugspitze y tuvo que sobrevivir a base de líquenes... me refería a los "trocitos de crocanti" vivos que teníamos en nuestro delicioso postre de Apfelstrudel, crep, salsa de vainilla, y otros dulces varios... vivían, excepto los que se ahogaron en la vainilla. Lo peor es que tenía una pinta estupenda, y el postre que ofrecieron en substitución (helado) no era lo mismo.

If you were guessing this would be a post about the film with the rugby team lost in the Andes, you were completely wrong. And none of us was missed his/her way in the peaks of the Alps having to survive eating liquens (or something worse) either. I meant to talk about the tiny little living "crocant bits" that we had on top of our dessert with Apfelstrudel, crep, vanilla sauce and more... alive and kicking, except for the ones drowning in the sauce. The substitute dessert was certainly looking much less elaborate: just ice-cream.

Back in the Alps!

Nice long weekend of skiing in Mayrhofen, Austria. A few things to note/mention: the best weather we could expect, the steepest pist in Austria: Harakiri (there is a price for the best photo with the topic "I suvived Harakiri"), Javi's boots, award to the most spectacular fall to myself... and much much more.
Definitely we have to go back!

Downside: because of this trip I missed both Marta's (now @London) and Ingrid's (now @Montpellier) farewell parties. SORRY!!!

Sólo una semana para irme a esquiar, argh!!!! no puedo esperar. Este año al final no voy al viaje de semana completa de Alpendorf (la foto de la izda. es de ese viaje el año pasado) para ahorrar vacaciones, así que me he decidido por uno de los nuevos de fin de semana: Mayrhofen, ya os contaré que tal...
Pero un grupo bastante grande de gente sí que se va la semanita de Alpendorf.
